Roots and Shoots Conference - July
2010
|
Held at Christ Church Kenilworth in
Cape Town. Speakers: Revd John Atkinson & Edith Sher
At the feet of the Rabbi
Discipleship today resembles a Greek master/student relationship based on
information rather than the Hebraic emphasis on formation.
What is authentic discipleship? Using the first-century rabbi-disciple
relationship as a model, John Atkinson contrasts the discipleship methods
commonly used in the Church today with the discipleship of Jesus’ time, teaching
on what it means to be a disciple of Rabbi Jesus.
Edith Sher compares the relationship between the rabbi and the first century
disciple to a father/son relationship. The model for this, Edith points out, was
the relationship between Elijah & Elisha. Edith also explores the nature of the
conflict between Yeshua and the religious leaders of his day. The way we view
that conflict continues to affect the Church's relationship with the Jewish
people.
